World Suicide Prevention Month

#SuicidePrevention #WorldSuicidePreventionMonth

This month is a time for the whole world to talk openly, share resources, and raise awareness about suicide prevention.

Why it matters globally

Every year, over 700,000 people die by suicide worldwide. That’s 1 person every 40 seconds.

Suicide is a leading cause of death among young people aged 15-29.

It affects every country, every community, and people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds.

The stigma around mental health keeps many people from asking for help. This month is about breaking that silence, reducing shame, and letting people know: you are not alone, and help exists.

How we can help, wherever we are

1. Start the conversation - Ask someone directly if they are struggling. Asking does not put the idea in their head.

2. Listen with empathy - No lectures, no judgment. Just be there. Let them know they matter.

3. Connect to support - Encourage professional help. Doctors, counselors, trusted leaders, and support groups can make a difference.

4. Check in and follow up  - A message, a visit, a call. Ongoing support saves lives.

5. Advocate - Push for better mental health services, education, and funding in our communities and countries.

6. Be kind - Small acts of care and inclusion matter more than we think.

If you or someone you know needs help

Reach out to local health services, trusted professionals, or crisis helplines in your country.

You can also contact international resources like Befrienders Worldwide or the WHO for helpline directories.

If someone is in immediate danger, contact emergency services right away.

The point of this month

To remember those we’ve lost.

To support those who are struggling.

To remind everyone that talking about mental health is a sign of strength, not weakness.

We can all play a part in prevention. Let’s use this month to listen, to learn, and to reach out.
