WORLD MALARIA DAY 2026

_25 April | Theme: “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.”_

What is World Malaria Day?

Every 25 April, the world speaks up against malaria. In 2026, the message is clear: _Now we can. Now we must._

For the first time, ending malaria is really possible. But if we slow down, malaria will come back fast.

Why “Now we can”?

Science is moving faster than ever:

1. New vaccines are here. They protect children who are most at risk.

2. Better treatments cure malaria quicker.

3. New tools like bed nets, sprays, and mosquito traps work better.

4. Technology helps us track and stop outbreaks early.

We have the tools. That’s why we say: _Now we can._

Why “Now we must”?

Malaria doesn’t rest. When money stops or programs weaken, malaria returns. The progress we made can be lost in months.

That’s why 25 April 2026 is a call to action: protect lives now and fund a malaria-free future.

Malaria numbers to know

In the Western Pacific Region in 2024:

- 1.7 million malaria cases

- 346 deaths

- 2.3 cases for every 1,000 people at risk

The numbers are steady, but “steady” is not good enough when we can end it.

How it goes in Africa

Africa carries the biggest load. About 94% of all malaria cases and deaths happen in Africa. Children under 5 and pregnant women are hit hardest.

But there’s hope:

1. Vaccines are rolling out. Countries like Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya are giving malaria vaccines to children. This is a game-changer.

2. Community health workers test and treat malaria in villages, even far from hospitals.

3. New bed nets kill mosquitoes that became resistant to old ones.

4. Local data tools help track where malaria is hiding so teams can act fast.

The challenge: Funding cuts, climate change, and drug resistance threaten progress. In some places, cases are rising again.

What can we do in Africa?

1. Leaders: Keep funding strong. Don’t cut malaria money when things look better. That’s when malaria strikes back.

2. Communities: Sleep under bed nets every night. Get tested fast if you have fever. Finish all malaria medicine.

3. Parents: Take your child for the malaria vaccine where available. It saves lives.

4. Everyone: Clean standing water around homes. Mosquitoes breed there.

The bottom line

We’ve never been closer to ending malaria. Africa has the tools, the people, and the know-how.

_Now we can_ end malaria.

_Now we must_—because every minute, a child still dies from it.

On 25 April 2026, let’s push harder, fund smarter, and protect each other. A malaria-free Africa is possible.
