World Letter Writing Day

Today we celebrate World Letter Writing Day. #WorldLetterWritingDay #WLWD

Letters have changed history. Think of Martin Luther King Jr’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” A single letter can inspire movements, comfort a friend, and connect people across distance.

How to observe
1. Write a letter Take a break from social media and put pen to paper. Write to a friend, family member, or someone you admire.
2. Learn the art Join a calligraphy course and make your letter beautiful.
3. Read more Check out Letters of the Century: America 1900-1999 by Lisa Grunwald and Stephen J. Adler for powerful letters from the past.
4. Teach kids Read children’s books about letter writing like Dear Dragon: A Pen Pal Tale, Ten Thank You Letters, or Dear Teacher.

History of the Day
World Letter Writing Day was founded in 2014 by Richard Simpkin. In the late 1990s, he wrote letters to Australian legends and was excited when they wrote back. Those letters helped him create his 2005 book, _“Australian Legends.”_ That excitement led him to start a day to promote letter writing. He now runs letter writing workshops in schools and encourages adults to slow down and write by hand.

Today, let’s bring back the joy of a handwritten letter.
