South Sudan Independence Day: A Celebration of Freedom

July 9th marks a significant milestone in South Sudanese history – the day in 2011 when the Republic of South Sudan declared its independence from the Republic of Sudan, becoming the 54th independent nation in Africa and the 193rd member state of the United Nations.  This momentous occasion is celebrated annually as a national holiday.

A History Forged in Struggle:

The path to independence was long and arduous. While geographically distinct, South Sudan and Sudan share a history intertwined since antiquity, both falling under the ancient Egyptian Empire.  Subsequent centuries saw Muslim Arab settlement from the 14th century and conquest by Muhammad Ali in 1820.  British-Egyptian rule followed in 1899, effectively making Sudan a Crown colony.

Sudan's independence in 1956 did not bring immediate peace to the South. Demands for greater autonomy and representation led to the First Sudanese Civil War.  Periods of autonomous rule (1972-1983) were punctuated by a second civil war, finally culminating in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005.  This agreement paved the way for a referendum in 2011, where a resounding 98.83% of Southern Sudanese voted for independence.

At midnight on July 9th, 2011, the Republic of South Sudan was born, a testament to the resilience and determination of its people.  WAELE AFRICA Foundation recognizes this significant achievement and remains committed to supporting South Sudan's progress and development.
