Tanzania Union Day 26th April

Tanzania celebrates Union Day on April 26th each year, a public holiday commemorating the unification of Zanzibar and Tanganyika on April 26, 1964.  This significant event marked the birth of the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, which later became the United Republic of Tanzania.

WAELE AFRICA Foundation extends its warmest congratulations to the government and people of the Republic of Tanzania 🇹🇿 on this occasion, wishing them continued happiness, success, and prosperity

A Nation Forged in Unity

The road to this momentous union began long before 1964.  While Vasco da Gama's 1498 visit marked the first European contact with the area, European colonialism arrived in mainland Tanzania in the late 19th century.  Germany established German East Africa.  Following World War I, Britain took control of the mainland, governing it as Tanganyika, while Zanzibar remained under a separate administration.

Tanganyika achieved independence in 1961.  Simultaneously, Zanzibar transitioned from British protectorate status to a constitutional monarchy under Sultan Jamshid bin Abdullah in December 1963.  However, a socialist revolution in January 1964 led to the Sultan's removal.  This revolutionary upheaval ultimately paved the way for the union of the two territories.  The resulting United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar formally came into being on April 26, 1964.  The nation's name was officially changed to the United Republic of Tanzania in October of that year.  Zanzibar retains a semi-autonomous status within the larger nation.

Did you know?

'Tanzania' is a combination of 'Tan' from Tanganyika and 'Zan' from Zanzibar, reflecting the origin of the country.
