Somalia's Republic Day: A Celebration of Unity (July 1st)

Today, July 1st, marks Somalia's Republic Day, a national holiday commemorating the unification of British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland on this day in 1960.  This momentous occasion created the Somali Republic, with Mogadishu as its capital.

A History Forged in Unity:

For centuries, Somalia, situated on the Horn of Africa, thrived as a vital center for trade along the Arabian Sea. However, the late 19th-century Scramble for Africa saw the country divided into British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland. Following Italy's defeat in World War II, Italian Somaliland came under British Military Administration before becoming a UN Trust Territory under Italian administration in 1949, with a planned independence within ten years.

British Somaliland achieved statehood on June 26th, 1960.  Five days later, on July 1st, 1960, it united with the Trust Territory of Somaliland, forming the Somali Republic.

The Somali Flag:

Adopted in 1954, Somalia's national flag uniquely deviates from the pan-African colors of green, red, and yellow.  Its blue and white, reminiscent of the UN flag, symbolize the five branches of the Somali race, represented by the central five-pointed star.

WAELE AFRICA Foundation's Greetings:
