Mozambique Independence Day: Celebrating 50 Years of Freedom

On June 25th, Mozambique commemorates its Dia da Independência Nacional (National Independence Day), marking 50 years of independence from Portugal in 1975.  WAELE AFRICA Foundation extends its warmest congratulations to the government and people of the Republic of Mozambique 🇲🇿 on this significant milestone. We wish the nation continued happiness, success, and prosperity.

A Brief History:

Mozambique's journey to independence is a story etched in both colonial history and the struggle for liberation.  European presence began with Vasco da Gama's voyages in the late 15th century, leading to Portuguese control by 1530.  Despite the growing wave of independence across Africa in the mid-20th century, Mozambique remained a Portuguese overseas territory.

This changed with the formation of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) in 1962.  FRELIMO launched an armed guerrilla campaign in 1964, igniting the Portuguese Colonial War that spanned nearly a decade.  The 1974 Portuguese revolution, restoring democracy to Portugal, shifted the colonial power's stance on its overseas territories.  Following a coup in April 1974, FRELIMO seized control of Maputo, the capital.  Finally, on **June 25th, 1975**, Mozambique declared its independence.  This date is now celebrated annually as a national holiday.
