WAELE AFRICA Foundation extends its warmest congratulations to the people of Liberia 🇱🇷 on the anniversary of their Independence Day! We wish the nation continued peace, prosperity, and happiness.
On July 26th, Liberia celebrates its Independence Day – a national holiday commemorating the declaration of independence from the United States and the adoption of its constitution in 1847. This momentous occasion marks Liberia as Africa's first and oldest modern republic.
A History Forged in Freedom and Hardship:
The Republic of Liberia's origins lie in the American Colonization Society (ACS), which believed that free Black people would find greater opportunity in Africa. Between 1822 and 1861, thousands of free Black Americans relocated to Cape Mesurado on the Pepper Coast of West Africa. In 1824, the colony was named Liberia, and its main settlement, Monrovia (named in honor of U.S. President James Monroe), became its capital – one of only two national capitals named after a U.S. President (the other being Washington, D.C.).
The early years were marked by immense hardship; disease and conflict with indigenous populations resulted in devastating mortality rates. However, within two decades, the colony had achieved economic stability and grown significantly.
Finally, on July 26th, 1847, the settlers declared independence and adopted a constitution heavily influenced by the United States Constitution. The United Kingdom was the first nation to recognize Liberia's independence, followed by the United States in 1862 during the American Civil War. This act of self-determination established Liberia as the first African republic.
Symbols of Liberty:
The Liberian flag, adopted on July 26th, 1847, mirrors the U.S. flag. Its eleven red stripes represent the eleven men who signed the Declaration of Independence, while the single white star symbolizes African freedom.
A Nation Celebrates:
According to the "Energetic and Social Observances Law," Title 26, Liberian Code of Laws of 1956, July 26th is an official public holiday. Each year, the President issues a proclamation declaring the holiday, usually a few days before the date. This year, under the leadership of President George Weah – the 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year – Liberia celebrates its enduring legacy of independence.
