INTERNATIONAL NO DIET DAY, May 6

What is No Diet Day?

Today, forget diets. No calorie counting. No guilt. No scales.

International No Diet Day is celebrated every 6 May. It’s a reminder to be kind to your body and focus on health, not just weight.

Why we need it

Most diets don’t stick. The Institute of Medicine says people who lose weight usually regain two-thirds within a year and almost all of it within five years.

Chasing the “perfect” body can hurt your mental and physical health. Today is a break from that pressure.

How to celebrate No Diet Day

1. Be kind to yourself

- Ditch the scale. Stop judging yourself by a number on a label or a machine.

- Celebrate who you are—your strength, kindness, humor, and uniqueness.

2. Eat without guilt

- Eat what you love, just because it tastes good.

- Drop the “good food” vs “bad food” mindset. Eat what you truly want.

- Try cooking something new you’ve always wanted to make.

3. Change the conversation

- Compliment people on their skills and achievements, not their looks.

- Have fun with food. Enjoy meals without shame.

4. Share it online

Use #NoDietDay to spread body positivity and self-acceptance.

History of the day

- 1992: Mary Evans Young, director of the British group “Diet Breakers,” started No Diet Day on May 5. It’s also her birthday.

- Why May 6? People in the U.S. Southwest worried it clashed with Cinco De Mayo, so Young moved it to May 6.

- 1993: Feminists around the world picked up the day.

- 1998: The International Size Acceptance Association and the National Organization for Women began supporting it too.

The bottom line

Your worth isn’t a number on a scale.

On May 6, take a break from diets. Treat your body with respect, eat what makes you happy, and focus on what makes you _you_.
