International Day of Peaceful Coexistence - 28 January
Peace is more than the absence of war; it's the ability to live together amid our differences - of sex, race, language, religion, or culture - while upholding justice and human rights. It's an ongoing process that demands constant care, vigilance, and active participation from everyone.
The 2030 Agenda highlights peace as one of its five pillars, central to its vision of fostering peaceful, just, and inclusive societies, free from fear and violence. With global instability on the rise, the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence raises awareness of diverse cultures and values, and promotes tolerance through education.
The UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/79/269 on 4 March 2025, proclaiming 28 January as the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence. The resolution emphasizes promoting tolerance, respect for diversity, and human rights.
The day invites countries, organizations, and civil society to celebrate through activities that foster a culture of peace, inclusion, and solidarity. The concept of a "culture of peace" was inspired by initiatives like Cultura de Paz and the Seville Statement on Violence, which declared war is a social invention, and peace is possible.
