International Day of Hope — 12 July

Today the United Nations marks the International Day of Hope — a day to celebrate hope as a force that unites us.

In a world facing unrest, social division, and economic and environmental challenges, hope reminds us that progress is still possible. It’s more than optimism. Hope means having the motivation to move forward and the belief that pathways exist to get there.

Why hope matters

1. For people: Research shows hope supports mental well-being and helps lower stress, anxiety, and depression. It’s also linked to better health outcomes and stronger resilience.

2. For communities: Hope builds trust, encourages dialogue, and helps people work together across differences. It supports reconciliation, inclusion, and peacebuilding.

3. For our future: Hope drives action on the Sustainable Development Goals. It fuels better health, learning, economic opportunity, and commitment to climate action.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres said: “The United Nations is the product of hope.”

How you can observe the day:

- Talk about it: Hold a “Circle of Hope” with friends, colleagues, or students to discuss challenges and solutions.

- Show up: Mentor someone, volunteer, check in on a neighbor, or join a community initiative.

- Share stories: Highlight acts of kindness, recovery, and cooperation in your community.

The International Day of Hope is an invitation to pause, reflect, and recommit — not to despair or division, but to shared humanity and the belief in a better tomorrow.

Because even in difficult times, hope can bridge divides, drive progress, and uplift the human spirit.
