Today, 28 September, the world marks the International Day for Universal Access to Information.
This day reminds us that every person, everywhere, has the right to seek, receive and share information. This right is at the heart of freedom of expression. It empowers people to make informed decisions, participate in democracy, demand accountability and build open and transparent societies. When citizens know how they are governed, corruption has nowhere to hide.
Despite its importance, many governments around the world still limit access to information. Many states do not yet recognize access to information as a fundamental right, and millions of people — especially persons with disabilities, minorities and those living in poverty — still face barriers to getting information. In several countries, internet access remains restricted or controlled.
Access to information must be for everyone, at every level — local, national and international.
Each year, UNESCO and countries around the world mark this day with Open Talks and national events. Some focus on Artificial Intelligence and ethics, some on internet access, and others on access to information for good governance.
At WAELE AFRICA Foundation, we believe access to information is power for African women and communities. When women have information about their rights, health, education and opportunities, they can transform their families and nations.
Let us work for a world where information is not a privilege, but a right for all.
