INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR PREVENTING THE EXPLOITATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN WAR AND ARMED CONFLICT — 6 NOVEMBER

Today, the world marks the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict.

War does not only take lives and destroy property. It also destroys the environment we depend on to survive.

During war and armed conflict, we witness water pollution, torched crops, poisoned soil, dead animals and destruction of forests. Sometimes these are done deliberately to gain military advantage. At other times, conflicts are driven by the struggle for natural resources such as oil, gold, diamonds and timber.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, 40 percent of internal conflicts in the last 60 years have been linked to the exploitation of natural resources.

When the environment is destroyed, women and girls suffer most. They lose access to clean water, safe food, shelter and livelihoods. Their health, safety and future are put at risk.

Today, WAELE AFRICA calls for peace, protection of our environment and responsible use of natural resources. World peace cannot be achieved if our ecosystem is destroyed.

Let us protect the environment. Let us protect lives.
