International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. 26 June

On 26 June, the UN marks a day to strengthen action against drugs. Set by General Assembly resolution 42/112 in 1987, the goal is clear: work together for an international society free of drug abuse.

Illicit drugs keep changing, and so do the problems they cause:

1. Rising use & new drugs: Global drug use and the number of substances on the market are increasing. Heroin’s long dominance in opioid markets is being challenged by new illegal opioids. Cocaine production and seizures are also up.

2. Synthetics on the rise: Low production costs and harder detection make synthetic drugs a growing threat.

3. Smarter trafficking: Organized crime uses technology to reach new people and move drugs faster, protecting billion-dollar networks.

4. Pressure on services: Health and justice systems are stretched, and many people still can’t access the help they need.

This year’s focus: Innovative responses

No one group can solve this alone. The day highlights how governments, communities, civil society, and the public can work together to:

- Reduce demand through education, prevention, and treatment.

- Reduce supply by closing gaps that traffickers exploit.

- Support health and justice so people get care, not just punishment.

Know the facts

Each year, UNODC releases the _World Drug Report_ with official data and science-based solutions. Facts matter because they guide real policies that protect lives and communities.

What we can do today

1. Talk about it: Break the silence at home, in schools, and online.

2. Support people, not stigma: Addiction is a health issue. Access to treatment saves lives.

3. Stay informed: Use reliable information from UNODC and local health services to spot risks early.

Drugs don’t build futures. People do.

Together, we can choose health, justice, and hope over illicit drugs.
