In Memoriam: WAELE AFRICA Foundation Mourns the Loss of Malawi's Vice President, His Excellency Saulos Klaus Chilima
The nation of Malawi is in mourning today as we grieve the tragic loss of Vice President, His Excellency Saulos Klaus Chilima aboard a military aircraft with nine others, late Chilima's plane went off the radar shortly after departing from Lilongwe, the capital. Despite efforts by aviation authorities to make contact with the aircraft, their attempts were unsuccessful.
The nation reached out to neighbouring countries and international partners for support in the rescue efforts, to hold onto hope for any survivors but unfortunately all died.
The plane, scheduled to land at Mzuzu Airport, was unable to do so due to poor visibility and was ordered to return to the capital. His Excellency, President Lazarus Chakwera shared the heartbreaking news with the nation in a televised address, expressing the country's deep sadness and shock at the turn of events.
HE, Vice President Chilima, a respected leader and potential candidate in next year's presidential election, leaves behind a legacy of dedication and service to the people of Malawi.
HE, Vice-President Saulos Chilima's passing at the age of 51, served as Vice-President for 10 years, appointed by former President, His Excellency Peter Mutharika for his exemplary performance and work ethic.
Prior to his tenure as Vice-President, HE, Dr. Chilima made significant contributions as the managing director of Airtel Malawi, becoming the first Malawian to hold such a position. In 2019, he ran for president and made history in Africa with the election results being overturned and a successful re-run that saw him become Vice-President to HE, President Chakwera.
Dr. Chilima's career spanned from leadership roles in renowned corporations like Coca Cola and Unilever to serving as a minister focusing on economic planning and public sector reforms. His academic achievements, including a PhD in knowledge management, highlighted his dedication to both public service and intellectual pursuits.
Born on February 12, 1973, in Ntcheu district, Malawi, Dr. Chilima leaves behind his wife Mary and two children, Sean and Elizabeth.
