Happy Independence Day, Lesotho!

Today, October 4th, 2025, Lesotho celebrates its Independence Day, marking 59 years of freedom from British rule. As the nation commemorates this significant milestone, WAELE AFRICA Foundation extends its warmest congratulations to the people of Lesotho

A Brief History
Lesotho's journey to independence began in the 1820s when King Moshoeshoe I united the local tribes to defend against Zulu attacks. The kingdom later became a British protectorate in 1868 and a colony in 1884. After nearly a century of British rule, Lesotho finally gained independence on October 4th, 1966, with Moshoeshoe II as king and Chief Leabua Jonathan as prime minister.

- The Kingdom in the Sky: Lesotho holds the record for the highest low point in the world, with its lowest elevation being 1,500 meters above sea level.
