A Nation's Struggle for Sovereignty
Algeria's path to independence was fraught with conflict. Partially under Ottoman rule from the early 16th century, the country faced French invasion in 1830. Unusually for French colonies, Algeria was integrated into French territory, leading to significant French settlement and the confiscation of tribal lands. This fueled growing resentment among the Muslim population, culminating in the "Red (Bloody) All Saints' Day" uprising in the mid-20th century.
This uprising ignited the Algerian War of Independence. While France achieved military victories, the war's brutality and the increasing international opposition to French rule eventually eroded support for colonial control. The Évian Accords, signed in March 1962, paved the way for Algerian independence. Following overwhelmingly supportive referendums in both France and Algeria, Algeria gained its sovereignty on July 5, 1962. Independence Day was officially recognized as a national holiday two days later.
