4.5 Million Girls at Risk of FGM in 2026, UN Warns

Ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by 2030 requires a concerted effort from governments, civil society, communities, and individuals. The practice, which affects over 230 million girls and women worldwide, has severe physical, sexual, and mental health consequences. To accelerate progress, the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme is calling for sustained investment and commitment.

The Stakes are High

- 22.7 million additional girls are at risk of undergoing FGM by 2030 if action isn't taken

- 4 million girls are subjected to FGM annually, with 2 million under the age of 5

- The rate of decline must be 27 times faster to meet the Sustainable Development Goal target by 2030

Call to Action

- Break the Silos: Integrate FGM prevention into education, health, and economic programs

- Scale Funding: Strengthen domestic resource mobilization and private sector engagement

- Data-Driven Decisions: Invest in national data systems to track progress and inform policies

- Utilize Influence: Use professional skills or social influence to challenge behaviors that perpetuate  FGM

This year's theme, "Towards 2030: No end to female genital mutilation without sustained commitment and investment," emphasizes the need for continued support. Join the movement by sharing your stories, strategies, and investments using #Invest2EndFGM and #EndFGM.
